the Ripple Project

THE RIPPLE PROJECT, the winning Great Art for Great Lakes submission for the Owen Sound area, celebrates the magnificence of Lake Huron and the community living within its basin. Sculptor Julia White conducted ‘Ripple Maker’ community engagement workshops over the summer of 2017 where visitors contributed to the installation by drawing water, making waves, doing water doodles and sharing stories about our Great Lake and the feelings it inspires. For this Canada 150th Legacy Project commissioned by Greatness, an element from each participant’s creative water offering was incorporated into the final flowing design and laser-cut out of steel panels. The resulting ‘Water Columns’ are lit from within with watery blue light, and will remain on permanent display at the Grey County Municipal Offices in Owen Sound as a source of inspiration, hope and vision around all aspects of water, for all to enjoy.
Thanks to all who made it such a great success!
NEWS! The Ripple Project has been relocated from the Roxy Theatre and is now on permanent display within the newly-renovated Great County Municipal Offices in Owen Sound, Ontario.

“It has truly been an inspiring experience” says White, “to work with my community and gather and weave together diverse voices and perspectives about what water and our great Lake Huron means to us. I hope that our collaborative installation continues to be a source of inspiration, hope and vision for my community around all aspects of water and our Great Lake. It is such a treasure.”

Community Water Offerings
Thank you Ripple Makers !
The Owen Sound and area community was invited to participate in this Great Art for Great Lakes project and to submit creative “water offerings” that celebrate water and Lake Huron and the feelings it inspires. Many people came out to join local artist Julia White at the ‘Ripple Maker Events’ to make and add their ripple! We gathered inside the sculptural environment of White’s WATER Shadows, an installation of sound sculptures made of steel and old bicycle inner tubes, that features field recordings of local watery soundscapes. Participants drew water, made waves, did water doodles and shared stories about what Great Lake Huron and magnificent Georgian Bay mean to us. In this way we made ripples in our community and our world as we connected to what makes our lake so special! An element from each participant’s creative water offering was incorporated into the final flowing design and laser-cut out of steel panels. The resulting ‘Water Columns’ are lit from within with watery blue light, and will remain on permanent display at the Grey County Municipal Building in Owen Sound as a source of inspiration, hope and vision around all aspects of water, for all to enjoy.
